Northampton Community College’s Computer Science program prepares students to transfer to a four-year institution and earn their bachelor’s degree. This associate degree can be completed in two years for those that enroll full-time or three to five years for those that enroll part-time. Evening classes are available and students can choose to complete the program at either our Monroe or Bethlehem campus. Some courses are also available online.

In this program, students learn to construct, verify, and implement systems by writing and running programs in standard programming languages. The program also provides a broad background in the humanities and integrates principles of mathematics.

Program Information

In addition to providing a foundation of knowledge in the field, the Computer Science curriculum also offers an introduction to general education classes that students would encounter in a four-year program. Courses such as College Success provide the tools students need to thrive in academics at Northampton and beyond. Computer Science-specific classes include Data Structure, Discrete Mathematics, and Computer Organization.

Graduates of Northampton’s Computer Science program walk away with a comprehensive understanding of computer hardware that is needed to critically interpret technical information, and the nature, characteristics, and design issues of contemporary computing systems. While in the program, students utilize critical thinking skills to evaluate computing issues and explore options for solutions. They then implement those ideas to successfully solve programming problems.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of software developers is projected to grow 24 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.
